While in the cooling mode, heat pumps receive a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration or SEER number. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system is. Most new heat pumps rate between 13.0 and 19.0.      While in the heating mode, heat pumps also receive a Heating Seasonal Perfomance Factor of HSPF rating. Again, the higher the number, the more efficiently the system works.
